We announced on Monday that the monthly Word Up events are going to be paused for a little while. The Birthday event was something special, and we hope that the magic will shine through until the next time we open up the doors.

A massive *thank you* to Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan for flooring the audience as our surprise headliner, Usaama Minhas for filling the room with depth and light, and Faisal Salah for sending his beautiful voice and words drifting in to our hearts. It will be an evening that stays with us for a long time to come.

Although the monthly Word Up events are pausing, we've got a couple of special shows coming up - with the first on the 27th September, keep your eyes peeled on here for details.

The heart of Word Up will be carrying on at the Words Down writing group, every Monday at Tone Coffee Shop, where the formidable Hannah Gordon is creating an amazing refuge for writers.

Massive love to everyone who has supported us over the last two years. A big shout out to our man Thomas Owoo for sponsoring all the media, Andre LL-Offical for providing us amazing footage of every performance to work with, and Tyrone Lewis for capturing gorgeous intricate moments on the night through his photos. Thank you to The Masons Arms, and Harlesden Picture Palace for providing us with a space to build a community.

Most of all, thank you to all of the poets who have graced our stage and shared glimpses of their soul, and all of the audience who have been part of the moments.

Laura and I are taking a bit of time off from WU to have a baby..! It's exciting and scary in equal measure; we feel blessed for all the love and well wishes from the fam.

We'll be back, stay tuned

Charlie and the Word Up team.

Word Up Birthday Special: NW London's Spoken Word Open Mic Night SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

We at Word Up are so excited to announce Usaama Minhas and Faisal Salah as our two amazing headliners for our birthday special.

Here is a little bit about our 1st headliner...

Usaama Minhas started writing in his teens and later spent a year in New York on an actor training conservatory for Theatre, Film and TV. In New York, Usaama started performing at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and the Pyramid Club.

On returning to the UK, he moved to London to pursue a career in Hip Hop and, in 2013, he released the Hand in Hand EP, a self-produced album combining Rap music and Spoken Word poetry. Later that year, Usaama won the 'Britain's Got Bars' Rap Battle Tournament at French Montana’s show at the indigo at The O2, sharing the stage with Lady Leshurr and Ghetts.

In 2015, Usaama left music to focus on poetry. He has since been long-listed for the Out-Spoken Prize For Poetry 2017, and he was the April 2017 winner of Kat Francois's WORD4WORD poetry slam, and the May 2017 winner of the Genesis Poetry Slam. He will be competing in the Hammer & Tongue Hackney Slam Final! on July 4th, for a place in the national finals.
